Spiritual growth contains all the phases
of life: the rational, irrational, the feeling sensations
and will power. In spiritual growth identification with ego
structures is essential in order to transcend ego. For deep
transformation to take place, the death of 'who you think
you are' is important. It requires working with all those
things that bring comfort and being willing to let go of that
comfort through the realms of different kinds of neurosis
like despair and crisis. Perhaps ego structure in the west
is different than in the east. In the west God
is perceived as distant, allowing you to be judged by him,
thus taking it personally and on an individual level. Clearly
western ego is very much separated and independent of the
unconsciousness. As Jung puts it: "whatever you don't see
in the west doesn't exist." Whereas in the East your ego is
tied to family and community structure and they are conscious
of the greater social and spiritual totality. In spiritual
practice the basic question is not about the particular structure
of the individual or collective ego, which is in the realm
of the content of the mind; it actually focuses on the nature
of the activity of mind. The work in practice is to harmonize
both perspectives. Work of fusion is directed towards dissolving
such fears (through practices), which, come in the way of
a person in facing his/her truth. Ultimately peace is only
acquired by realising our own truth.
Although
psychological growth is very different from spiritual growth,
psychology is an integral part of spirituality; they both
enhance each other and cannot be separated. Like East and
West are two poles of the universe always co-creating and
bringing forth their unique expressions in the form of art
and science yet further to unite their diverse nature. Together
we can construct a bridge to overcome any fears, which may
be hindering ultimate blossoming of their unity.
